CSV formats: Changes to import and export of CSV files

Written by Adrian Berger

Please note that the following changes have been made to the import and export of CSV files since version 23.26.10:

Note

These changes affect the import and export of master data as well as reports.

Changes in masking

To ensure maximum compatibility, we have adapted the import & export of CSV files to the current international standard:

Important notes for CSV export

When exporting from Xentral, it is now mandatory to select a masking character. The apostrophe is used by default.

During the export, only cell contents that meet certain criteria are masked, for example:

  • Text with spaces

  • Cells with line breaks

This means that from now on, not all exported cells are automatically masked. Please check whether scripts on your site need to be adapted accordingly.

Important notes for CSV import

If a data field already has quotation marks or apostrophes, this is duplicated by the standard CSV format. For example:

  • HTML links should be imported into a product description:

<a href="https://xentral.com">xentral</a> must be specified with two apostrophes in the future: <a href=""https://xentral.com"">xentral</a>.

It is best to use the apostrophes as masking so that the CSV editors recognize the texts correctly.

CSV import to spreadsheet software

If you want to process the data exported from Xentral in Microsoft Excel, please select the quotation mark " as masking, as this is the only masking Excel supports. As an alternative to Excel, you can also use LibreOffice or OpenOffice.
