About the AWS Cloud

Written by Adrian Berger

Xentral offers their cloud services through Amazon Web Services (AWS). The Xentral cloud servers - excluding the US instances - are located in Frankfurt am Main.

Note

The Xentral cloud is intended to run the software. Xentral does not provide a server where you can store files via Xentral transfer module and from which other programs can retrieve this data. For this, you need a separate FTP server, which can also be accessed by the fulfiller.

Our cloud services provide guaranteed accessibility of 99.5% per year (EC2 SLA from AWS). They feature support for operation by Xentral and a data center in Frankfurt which is ISO 27001 and ISO 27018 certified (Amazon AWS).

Note

For performance and security reasons, access to local server directories or to the database is not possible.

Data protection considerations

All Xentral clouds are subject to a strict security concept. The servers of the customers have no direct connection to the Internet. They are located in so-called VPC (VPN) zones and by default have no fixed IP addresses. Access is only via https through a load balancer, which in turn does not accept any other traffic. Thus the servers are well protected against hacker attacks. The databases do not have any network port open, but are only accessible for the local PHP software. Furthermore the servers are secured by the firewall.

To protect you from data loss, a daily backup of the instances takes place. This can be restored up to seven days later. When an instance is deleted, we keep a final snapshot of the instance for 2-3 months, in case the customer wants to resume the instance.

FAQ

What do I do if the AWS Cloud is unreachable?

If the cloud instance is not accessible, it may be because your update did not go through cleanly.

Proceed as follows:

  1. In this case, call the following page: MYURL/update.php. Instead of "MYURL" enter your URL.

  2. Log in and run the update again. After that the instance should be available again.

Can I access the database if the hosting is directly at Xentral?

No, this is not possible. For security reasons and to protect data integrity, we cannot give you access to the database. However, you can view the data from your database in your xentral system in the "Database View" module (My Area > My Apps or via Super Search).

Can I have data deleted from Xentral on the cloud?

No, this is not possible. The reason for this is that data integrity can otherwise no longer be guaranteed.

Can the URL of my Xentral instance be customized?

Yes, this is usually possible as an additional option. Instead of the automatically generated string, your instance receives an individual name below xentral.biz, for example mycompany.xentral.biz. The previous address still redirects to the new address.

The Xentral account team checks whether the customization is possible for your instance and tells you the costs. To do so, contact [email protected].

How do I get the IP address for the Xentral cloud?

Due to freely scalable resources in our cloud, we cannot give out the IP address of the cloud by default.

If you permanently need an IP address that stays the same, for example for whitelisting with a third-party system, your instance can receive a static IP address. The Xentral account team clarifies with you whether this is available for your plan and what it costs. To do so, contact [email protected].

Without a static IP address, you determine the current IP via the access log of the server you transfer to.

Note

It is possible that the IP changes per request - depending on the load on our cloud.

This process should be automated as much as possible, because this IP can change often (per request).

What do I do if my Xentral system is unreachable and I get 500, 502, or 504 error messages?

  • If your Xentral system is on our cloud, please contact our support via the support ticket system.

  • If your Xentral system is running on its own server, please contact your administrator.

How do I deal with the technical error message "Xentral: An unexpected error has occurred"?

  1. Perform another update via your url.xentral.biz/update.php.

  2. If the problem persists after an update and the error message appears again, contact our support via the ticket system.
